I have the unique experience of already working in a Title I (low-income) k-8 school as a tutor/Aide/after-school instructor before I start my TFA journey.
Yesterday was my first day doing all my above-mentioned roles, as I was just hired to do the after school science enrichment class. After reading Teaching as Leadership, I was excited to apply what I’ve learned in any way I can to help the students I work with. I greeted them personally with a smile before tutorial class and encouraged them to work hard and stay focused more than usual. It was an intense day that started with a 7th grader having me read her “story” about a girl going through a rough home life with divorce, evictions and “beatings.” Which said was “fiction but based on real events.” The story is for a class of hers so I will have to discuss it with…
